Chains of Torment
By far the richest of all the Duergar clans, Clan Goldbreaker was founded thousands of years ago by the Duergar High King/Demi-god Kurzak-Zha. It is fabled that he sent his seven sons to the far corners of Johrani to mine and battle for the glory of the Duergar race. His second son, Brenzsh, was the first Duergar to settle in the wilds of the Depression of Bren long before humans ever set foot in these lands.
The clan built elaborate underground communities around and under the Depression where they found plentiful veins of gold which gave the clan it’s name and made them wealthier than any other clan would ever be.
Alas, goldlust inevitably took hold and petty squabbles and infighting led to civil wars which decimated the population. After several thousand years the clan, though still wealthy, was left a husk of it’s former glory. By the time humans came to Johrani and settled the Depression, Clan Goldbreaker was already teetering on collapse.
On the surface the humans formed the town of Brengold and began to make incursions into the mountains looking for precious metals and unwittingly stumbled upon the mines of the Clan. The ruling Chieftain Harfik’s people lived so far underground that they allowed this incursion to take place with little to no resistance to the humans. After 100 years though, the humans had delved so deep that regular meetings and clashes were becoming more and more frequent. Harfik began ordering his troops to kill on sight in an effort to drive the humans back. An eye for eye, tooth for tooth war of attrition ensued in which there was never any clear winner.
The Johrani Emperor ordered the local Baron Bargis Trim to exterminate the Clan with magic, mostly carried out by wizards from his own court. Harfik fell early on during the onslaught and it was left to his son Rorik to guide his tattered and ruined Clan. A guerilla campaign has effectively shut down mining operations and left both Clan Goldbreaker and the town of Brengold in tatters.
